Child Counseling

Sparrow House Counseling is committed to providing the highest quality of emotional and cognitive treatment for children, adolescents, and families. We utilize evidence-based interventions (meaning interventions that have proven to be efficacious in research and practice) to treat a variety of pediatric concerns. Our goal is to work with a family to promote the health and well-being of each child/teen.

There are a variety of conditions and concerns that can impact a child or teen; therefore, it is difficult for us to develop a comprehensive list of every concern and condition that we treat. If your child has concerns or a diagnosis that is not listed on our website, please contact us and we would love to help you through providing referrals or informing you if we have a clinician who does treat the particular condition.

Families who are working through the unique stressors of divorce often find that their children can greatly benefit from therapy. These parents should know prior to scheduling their children for counseling that a copy of the divorce decree is required for clinicians to start working with their children. If you are currently in the divorce process, please be aware that though our therapists are qualified to work with your children, we are not forensic psychologists and do not provide the services to determine child custody.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent Child Interaction Therapy

(PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment (based on rigorous research studies) for children who are experiencing non-compliant and disruptive behavior. Some examples of behavior concerns that are appropriate for PCIT are not listening or disobeying, dawdling, temper tantrums, fighting or aggressive behavior, parents who are not feeling effective in dealing with their child’s behavior problems, and parents who feel that their child’s behavior gets in the way of them building or maintaining a positive
relationship. PCIT involves real-time, in-session parent coaching during interactions with the child. Also, PCIT is designed to help parents interact more positively with their child and effectively manage problem behaviors.

Play Therapy

Children tend to use play in much the same way that an adult might use verbal communication to discuss their problems. It is through play that children develop emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Play Therapy is used specifically to discover boundaries, self-regulation, communication, resiliency, expression and emotionalcommunication.

Parent Consultation

Sparrow House therapists seek to work closely with parents as a means to provide support to the entire family. Parents are often referred to Sparrow House by teachers, administrators, psychologists, psychiatrists and pediatricians. Our goal is to provide good psycho-education and to guide parents as their children grow in the therapy process. Consultation will often include helping parents to structure the home environment in such a way that supports what the child is learning in therapy.

Social Skills Groups

The groups will consist of learning a new social skill from an evidenced-based curriculum and will allow your child the opportunity to practice the new skill with peers. The social skills discussed will be tailored to the needs of your child through a parent self-report scale administered at the onset of the program. You will receive a note at the end of each group regarding what skill was learned and some tips on how to practice this skill at home.


Sparrow House Counseling is now offering a variety of assessment services. Some of the common concerns we provide assessments for include but are not limited to:

  • Learning difficulties and disorders (including eligibility for accommodations in learning environments)
  • Attention disorders
  • Developmental disorders (such as developmental delays and autism spectrum disorders)
  • Behavioral and emotional disorders (such as social difficulties, anxiety, and mood disorders)


Autism Evaluations

We now offer autism spectrum evaluations for preschool age through adult. These evaluations include the gold standard instrument in autism diagnosis, the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2), as well as a developmental interview with parents and/or caregivers. Evaluation of cognitive, academic, attention, adaptive functioning, and emotional/behavioral functioning will also be conducted as appropriate.
