Joy Lockard, MS, is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a passion for walking alongside her clients as they pursue healing and wholeness in their lives and relationships. In 2000, Joy received her bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication Studies from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. After experiencing the life-changing value of an authentic therapeutic relationship, Joy decided to pursue a career in counseling. In 2006, she graduated with a master’s degree in Marital and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.
Joy’s clinical training has included work with children, families, individual adults, and couples in community mental health, school-based mental health, and more recently, in private practice settings. She has also worked as a parenting educator for expecting and new parents and group leader for mothers of children with special needs. Joy has experience working with clients on a wide range of issues, including family of origin and boundary issues; grief and loss; parent-child attachment; major life transitions such as launching in early adulthood, marriage, pregnancy and early motherhood; and anxiety and depression. Joy is a certified Prepare-Enrich facilitator and enjoys working with couples preparing for marriage. She also has a special interest in working with women in all stages of motherhood, including those struggling with infertility and postpartum adjustment reactions such as postpartum depression and anxiety.
Joy believes that healing and growth takes place within the context of relationships. Thus, her aim is to provide a safe space in which clients can process their struggles and identify personal, spiritual, and relational resources and strengths that will help them to become more of who they were created to be. She counts it a great privilege and gift to be invited along on this incredible journey.
Joy and her family are actively involved in their church where she and her husband teach in the premarital preparation program. In her free time, Joy enjoys taking walks, doing yoga, curling up with a good book, trying out new restaurants with her husband, or having a dance party at home with her three young children.
